Book Excerpts
"Unpopular Color"
They abandon us,
Say were not good enough.
All we like to do is
Cuss and fuss.
Label us “Notorious”
Claim were too dark
And not that smart.
And the whiter version
Fits the part.
You aint no different from me…
She aint no better than me…
Too bad you can’t see
When God created color
He didn’t say,
“Scrub it off
And be ashamed of your
Brown identity.”
"THE AFFAIR"
I found out about your affair today.
Your secret lover came to my job
She was shouting, yelling,
Head snapping, toes tapping
So much that she drew a mob.
Saying I was holding up our divorce
Fighting with you over alimony, visitation rights,
And child support.
After she finished ranting like a lunatic,
I shut Miss Know-It-All up real quick
I said,
“Ma’am I divorced him five years ago,
Before he went to jail.”
My ex-mother-in-law called me last year
And said he got a disease in prison
That made him bony as a stick.
The reason he won’t marry you
Is not because of me….
It’s probably because the blood test will
Come back and show
He has that disease called HIV.
"HIM"
Do you love him?
Do you need him?
If he dumped you
Would you stalk him?
Do you give all to him…
Would you
Duck, dive, and low-crawl for him?
When you get your paycheck,
Do you hand it all to him?
Do you keep any for yourself
Or believe he’s in charge of
All your wealth?
Have you ever stood still?
Do you know how you feel?
Do you realize you never
Talk about yourself…
Only him.
